Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance is also traveling to Minneapolis today for a fundraiser.
During his visit, Vance visited the site of a former Minneapolis police precinct building that was burned down by protesters in 2020 after police killed George Floyd, an unarmed Black man. His killing sparked anti-racism protests around the world.
Speaking to reporters on the street, Vance accused Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, then a first-time gubernatorial candidate, of encouraging protesters to set fire to buildings.
Reporters asked Vance how his criticism squared with a 2020 phone call with then-President Trump, in which he praised Walz’s response to the unrest.
Vance said Trump was nothing but “kind and courteous” during the call.
“During the debate, I treated Governor Walz with civility. That doesn’t mean we should have burned down the rioters and looters in the city of Minneapolis,” he said.
“That doesn’t mean Tim Walz can get away with the fact that he burned down his own city,” he continued.
Walz defended him, saying the administration tried to make the best of a difficult situation. Read more about Waltz’s response to the 2020 protests here.
Early Monday morning, Vance’s plane landed at the Minneapolis airport shortly after Walz’s plane took off, transporting the Democratic candidate to neighboring Wisconsin.
According to CNN, Vance also plans to go to Chicago for a second fundraiser during his Midwest trip.
