Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Segun Sowunmi has unveiled plans for a new political force known as “Alternative”.
Sowunmi said the force is looking for reliable candidates for the upcoming 2027 general elections.
He said the movement, launched in Jos last week, seeks to challenge Nigeria’s traditional political framework.
Naija News reports that Sowunmi made this point during a town hall meeting of the North Central Zone Ethnic Opposition Movement held at the Fox Hotel.
The former governorship candidate of the PDP in Ogun State has articulated the group’s goals, stressing that Nigerians are disillusioned with the current political climate and are seeking credible alternatives.
“The concept of this platform is to identify and support credible candidates at the grassroots level,” Sowunmi said.
He expressed dissatisfaction with Nigeria’s democratic framework, which he characterized as plagued by corruption and selfish leadership.
He called for an overhaul of the country’s governance system, including the opposition, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the judiciary, while advocating for stricter law enforcement and penalties for political misconduct.
He emphasized the need to re-educate the public on civic duties, especially related to voting, saying: “Low turnout and vote buying and selling undermine democracy. All citizens are reluctant to cede power to a few individuals. Instead, they must actively participate in the political process.”
He said the movement’s goal is to give citizens more control over their political environment by establishing their own frameworks and motivating them to support candidates who reflect their values. insisted.
He described the initiative as a “liberation initiative” for all Nigerians, regardless of their socio-economic background.
Addai Edwin Addai, Chairman of the National Opposition Movement North Central Zone, has painted a bleak picture of the democratic situation in Nigeria, accusing INEC of evolving into an “election rigging organization”.
