Nigerian superstar Victory had a major impact on the sound of modern afropop. Following the release of his debut album, Stubborn, he highlights some of the best songs in his catalog.
Victony’s music has a unique feel and uniquely combines Afrobeat and Trap. Ever since entering the scene about three years ago, the Nigerian artist has been attracting attention for his storytelling, inspired by his life experiences, struggles and victory. Many were introduced to Victory through the global hit “The Holy Father” and “The Holy Father” one of the biggest Afrobeat songs of all time. But there’s more to Victor Anthony Ebuka’s music.
In his early project, Saturn, Victony showed a keen perception of the stories around him, infusing his unique perspective. The maturation of the theme manifested in the Outlaw EP, where he began to explore the dramatic possibilities of complex relationships in modern Nigerian society. Last year, Victony delved deep into the musical landscapes inside him with the release of his first full-length project, Stubborn.
To celebrate this album, we’ll be introducing a list of some of Victony’s best songs.
"Colomental"
This mid-tempo track sees Victory paying homage to his friend Doyne. He was tragically defeated in a car accident that the singer couldn’t walk. The catchy hooks from The Sothing Track, produced by Blaise Beatz, include the meditation of a young man overwhelmed by the seemingly mundane aspects of life.
“The Holy Father” (with Mayorkun)
Deliberate collaborator Victony featured Mayorkun on track 7 of his sophomore album Back In Office on “Holy Faster.” Beyond the gentle vitality of the production, consisting of bright percussion instruments and groovy undertones, the song boasts a cinematic music video directed by TG OMORI.
"all"
The iconic collaboration between Sampling Post Malone and Swaerie, “Sunflower,” was released in “All.” The Outlaw King promises to appear for his woman, give her everything she wants, revealing the more romantic aspects. “All” comes with a music video, some of which were filmed on the farm.
“Soweto”
The records created with Tempoe are one of Victony’s most popular singles. Along with a visual directed by Jyde Ajala, the song gained traction on Tiktok through a viral speedup version. Victony later released Remix featuring Rema and Don Toliver, and was successful in the UK, Netherlands, Switzerland and Canada.
“Ohama”
An exceptionally talented array, Ayra Starr, Odumodublvck, Rema, Babyboy AV, Bella Shmurda, Blaqbonez, Bloody Civilian, Crayon, Lojay, Magixx, Oxlade, Qing Madi, Ykb—Ohema rekindled the magic of collaboration. This collaborative experience was created through the efforts of Victony, bringing together 15 artists and three producers (Rexxie, Blaisebeatz, & Semzi) to create this memorable track.
“Stubborn” (featuring Asake)
Due to the title track of his album, Victony enlisted Asake as a guest artist. Victony explained that the album’s title reflects his personal story, his desire to achieve his dreams through music, despite the challenging circumstances. “You don’t tend to see the nearest future in your surroundings or environment, so I decided to go for it. That’s all about thinking about what makes me stubborn about the album. You can be creative. If you are chasing your dreams in, you are stubborn,” he said.
“risk”
On “risk,” Victory sings about superficial desires: money, clothing, attractive women. The theme is simple, but he brings substance to it. The elastic, unorthodox beat vibrates with each chant “risk, risk, risk.” Victony pushes creative boundaries in multidimensional flows and moves beyond typical Afrobeat conventions.
“Jaga Jaga” (featuring AV)
With this soulful melody of reflexes and resilience, Victony and AV combine their exceptional talent to create “Jaga Jaga.” This moving song demonstrates their artistry and ability to connect with listeners.
