Former Rivers State Governor and incumbent Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said he is under no obligation to apologize for his actions against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 presidential election.
Naija News reports that the FCT Minister made the remark on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Tuesday.
Wike denounced the accusations against him, saying he was acting against the party by refusing to support the then PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
According to him, he stood for only fairness, equity and justice.
“Regarding the presidential election, I said I support fairness, equity and justice. The other thing is, I will support my party and that is why I won the gubernatorial and parliamentary elections.
“There is no room for apology as president because I don’t believe in corruption. Today, people say, 'Punish Wike, he did anti-party.’ I am not doing any anti-party activities,” Wike said.
Naija News has learned that in the run-up to the 2023 general elections, Mr Wike, who was then Rivers State governor, had joined four other disgruntled governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including Samuel Ortom from Benue; He recalls forming an alliance with Seyi Makinde. Okezie Ikpeazu from Oyo, Okezie Ikpeazu from Abia and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi from Enugu.
These five governors have consistently insisted that Senator Iyorukia Ayu resign from the position of PDP National Chairman as a precondition for supporting the party’s presidential candidate, Mr. Atiku Abubakar.
Ultimately, Mr. Atiku lost the presidential election to Mr. Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which is currently in the government of Mr. Wike.
