Ekiti Governor Abiodun Oyebunji, speaking recently at the 11th annual public lecture of the Foursquare Gospel Church of Nigeria, said the search for good leadership is a persistent problem in Nigeria dating back to colonial times. He emphasized that there is.
He pointed out that even patriotic people who fought for independence end up facing accusations of incompetence and corruption once in power.
Mr. Oyebunji identified a major problem in the recruitment of leaders in Nigeria, saying that people often enter leadership positions without having the requisite aptitude or attitude.
He pointed out that this is due to subjective leadership evaluations based on socio-political or ethno-religious affiliations, which makes the search for ideal leadership difficult.
The Governor emphasized that leadership begins at home and extends to the greater society, emphasizing that every individual has a leadership role to play.
He listed values and skills essential to leadership, including responsibility, problem solving, vision, fairness, and accountability.
To address the leadership crisis, Oyebanji advocated leadership education, suggesting it should be as important as basic education in literacy and numeracy.
He suggested incorporating leadership skills and principles into school curricula to develop future leaders.
“There is no doubt that a major problem in the recruitment of leaders in Nigeria is that sometimes people end up in leadership positions without having the right aptitude or attitude.
“Similarly, the search for ideal leadership becomes more difficult, if not illusory, because assessments of leadership in our climate are subjective and determined by sociopolitical or ethnoreligious affiliations. In fact, the concept of leadership itself and its assumptions are as problematic as the concept itself.
Governor Oyebunji said national leadership begins from the home to the larger society.
“Every father is a leader, every mother is a leader, every child is a leader. From class president to national president, the core values and skills of leadership are the same: responsibilities, problems. “Resolution, vision, fairness, steadfastness, prudence, transparency, sobriety, resourcefulness, patience, responsiveness, creativity, accountability and above all, the fear of God,” he added.
