The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has criticized the Nigerian military for not pursuing Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, a former militant commander in the Niger Delta.
The group said it was pathetic that the military fired back at Dokubo but did not prosecute him for his comments.
Recall that extremists once threatened to shoot down military helicopters hovering near their homes.
In response, the military said Dokubo’s threat was ridiculous and recommended that he dare to confront the soldiers on the battlefield.
In response, Furiwa argued that Dokubo should be arrested and prosecuted.
They were furious that exchanging words with Dokubo would diminish the standing of the Nigerian military.
In a statement signed by Comrade Emmanuel Onwibiko, the group said, “Instead of enforcing the law to investigate, arrest and prosecute Asari Dokubo, the National Defense Headquarters is It’s such a pathetic sight to see them fighting back.” Although the threat is recent, he was seen on video brandishing a military-style assault rifle during previous outings.
“Is the Defense Headquarters pretending to ignore all these videos of Asari Dokubou?”
Mr Huliwa said the statement from the Defense Headquarters made it clear that certain people, especially those of some political persuasion, were treated as sacred cows, while others, especially the Igbo people, were officially made clear. In that case, he said he was making fun of the strategic position of the country’s military. People who speak South-Eastern Nigeria are treated as outlaws and decisively punished with a sledgehammer.
The group called this discriminatory policy unconstitutional and illegal.
They recalled that during the Muhammadu Buhari administration, the military invaded the private residence of long-detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. He was at home at the time after being granted bail by Judge Binta Murtala Nyako. Federal High Court.
“Just because Asari Dokubo is a friend of the current president and visited Aso Rock and spoke at a press conference immediately after taking office as the current president, the National Defense Headquarters is hiding under the guise of democracy and condoning illegal acts. has made shocking revelations, including claims that his private army was working as consultants for the federal government with the permission of the immediate past president.
“A few days ago, the same Asari Dokubo publicly threatened to shoot down a military plane that was allegedly flying around his vast mansion. However, the National Defense Headquarters has detained him for questioning and possible prosecution. “Instead of taking him to court, they showed shame and started talking out of both sides of his mouth in a clear demonstration of double standards,” the statement added.
