Mr. Amaechi, a former Rivers State governor, said he was disappointed with the response of Nigerians, especially the youth, to the current hunger and hardship in the country.
He said he was surprised by the calm response of Nigerians to the challenges, saying he had expected a more visible response from the people.
“I was expecting more agitation, especially from young people.
“I thought there would be protests in the streets, but people don’t seem to be expressing as much anger as I expected,” he said.
Mr. Amaechi further noted that despite hyperinflation and ballooning cost of living, the population remains largely motionless.
“We cannot have a situation where a group mismanages resources and expects the public to remain silent. The lack of action is truly baffling,” he said.
“Diesel prices are at an all-time high and some of us are finding it difficult to buy. But the public seems unfazed,” he added.
Amaechi criticized for calling for protests
In response, Sani called on the former minister to champion the cause he preaches.
“His Royal Highness Hon. Rotimi should organize and lead such protests as he wishes or desires,” the senator wrote in the X newspaper on Friday.
Similarly, the Minister of Defence, Dr Bello Matawalle, said the former governor’s statements could threaten the peace and stability of the country.
He also accused the former minister of inciting violence and insecurity among Nigerians.
“It is reckless and irresponsible for a former civil servant in the same position as Mr. Amaechi to incite Nigerians against their government.
“President Bola Tinubu has been working tirelessly and successfully to address the challenges facing the country through various reforms.
“It is absurd, ridiculous and shameful for anyone to exploit the true situation of our people for selfish political gain,” the defense minister said in a statement.
