Nigeria and Egypt won the team competition at the 2024 ITTF Africa Championship held in Addis Ababa on Monday, October 14th.
In the men’s competition, Egypt was absent, so Nigeria faced Algeria in a thrilling final. Omotayo faced Sami Kerouf in a tense match, but Kerouf won 3-2, giving Algeria a 1-0 lead. Mirhane Jerouli then faced Quadri Aruna and Nigeria won 3-1 to equalize.
Matthew Kuti showed his superiority with a 3-0 win over Mahaidin Berra, giving Nigeria a 2-1 lead. In the final, Aruna defeated Kerouf and Nigeria won 3-1, becoming the new African champions.
In the women’s event, Egypt continued to dominate. The trio of Hana Goda, Yousra Helmy and Maryam Alhodabi defeated Nigeria’s Ajoke Ojom, Fatimo Bello and Hope Udoaka. Goda got off to a strong start with a 3-0 win over Ojomu. Bello initially led 2-0 against Helmy, but Helmy made a stunning comeback to win 3-2. Ahodabi defeated Oudaka 3-0, sealing Egypt’s 3-0 victory.
