The album, which features Whitney Houston’s first live performance in South Africa, marks 30 years since the late singer’s visit to South Africa. Concert for a New South Africa (Durban) will be held on November 8th, 30 years since she last performed at the city’s Kings Park Stadium. The performance featured many of her hits, including the 10-minute long “I Will Always Love You,” “Saving All My Love for You,” and “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” Houston also performed in Johannesburg and Cape Town during his visit, celebrating the end of apartheid and President Nelson Mandela's election victory.
Houston’s estate teased the release by releasing a video of her emotionally performing “I Have Nothing” at a concert. The complete performance, with remastered audio and 4K resolution, will be available in select theaters later this month. Details are available on the special website.
The album will be available not only on CD and vinyl, but also digitally. Each release includes a slightly different tracklist. The CD and digital versions include the unreleased studio recording “Love Is.” Details about the various releases can also be found on the pre-order website.
“When Sony sent us the remastered version of the music, we were struck by the quality of the sound and the purity of her voice,” Pat Houston, the executor of Whitney’s estate, said in a statement. “This album will remind not only her core fans, but also music lovers around the world, of Whitney’s virtuosity as a recording artist. Her fans will love the live repetitions of her hits, I am sure that they will appreciate it. The fans have been waiting for this project for over 10 years and they have certainly expressed their feelings and made it known.
Clive Davis, who signed Houston to his Arista label as a teenager, was equally enthusiastic. “If you want to experience the greatest modern female voice of all time, you need to see Whitney Houston’s Durban, South Africa concert film and own the album,” he said. “There will be no more Whitney Houston.”
