Anti-monarchy group welcomes Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla on ‘farewell tour’
Anti-monarchy groups in Australia have welcomed King Charles and Queen Camilla’s impending visit to the country, but insisted it should be their “farewell trip”.
The Australian Republican Movement (ARM) said the visit, which begins on Friday (October 18), will give the British royal family “an opportunity to say goodbye to royal rule”.
ARM Co-Chairman Esther Anatolytis said on Twitter/X: “Welcome to Monarchy the Farewell Oz Tour.
“It’s time to say goodbye to royal rule. This week’s visit is a rare opportunity to ask the question we’ve all wondered for years: why does Australia still have a king?
“Does it make sense that our head of state would inherit the role by birthright and not be here full-time for the Australian people?
“By all means, let’s welcome Charles and Camilla to Australia, but let’s consider this to be the last visit of a sitting monarch. It makes a lot of sense.”
