There are growing indications that the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership led by Abdullahi Ganduje may postpone the inaugural general meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) until 2025.
APC secretariat officials who spoke to Punch attributed the possible postponement to the busy schedule and continued absence of President Bola Tinubu, who is yet to return to Nigeria.
A source said: “As we speak, the president has not yet returned home. This was also the reason why we had to cancel the original September date chosen for the NEC meeting. But in any case, the possibility of holding an NEC conference this year is no longer viable. There are just over two months left until the end of the year. Again, we can’t fix it during the December festival period. Maybe 2025, but 2024 is definitely behind us.”
These concerns come just two months after the APC announced the indefinite postponement of its national caucus and national executive committee, which were originally scheduled for September 11 and 12, respectively.
No official reason was given for canceling these meetings, but National Communications Secretary Felix Morca said new dates would be announced at a later date.
However, sources indicate that both engagements were called off due to Tinubu’s absence.
APC National Deputy Organizing Secretary, Nze Chidi Duru, confirmed that no new date has been set for the NEC meeting. “I don’t know anything about the new date. At this point, the postponement is still in effect,” he said.
Similarly, APC’s National Counsel Abdulkareem Khanna echoed this sentiment, saying, “I cannot say when the next NEC meeting will be held, I understand that the new date has not yet been fixed. We as APC cannot do anything until we get a new date from the President. He is expected to return from his trip soon.”
