Bayelsa State Deputy Governor Lawrence Efurujakpo has opened up about his ordeal as a victim of extortion and election-related ritual murder charges ahead of the November 2023 governorship election.
Speaking at a reception held at Akenfa Yenagoa, Euljakpo expressed gratitude for escaping a tragic car accident that could have taken his life. The event followed a special thanksgiving service at the sophisticated People’s Assembly.
Ehurudjakpo’s comments came in the wake of an incident last year in which five PYC members were involved in an accident while traveling to Ekeremole for an election event organized by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The lieutenant governor regarded the survival of all involved as an important personal victory, claiming it proved his innocence and exposed the malicious intent of his political opponents.
“In the aftermath of the accident, there have been many vile threats and unsubstantiated rumors about election-related ritual killings directed against me, especially as it happened in my native Ofoni community in Sagbama local government area. ” he said.
Ehurujakpo continued. “Today we are satisfied that we did not lose a single person in the camp. Even those who other factions claimed dead and who were used in rituals by the Ofoni men are alive with us here. I am grateful because I did not allow my enemies to win against me. What they wanted to happen to us happened in their camp.”
