The House of Commons on Tuesday called on the federal government to quickly renew two orbital slots given to the country by the International Telecommunications Union to prevent a $400 million loss.
This was submitted by the Member of Parliament representing Ilorin West/Asa Federal Constituency in Kwara State, Tolani Shagaya, “Protecting Nigeria’s Orbital Slots to Prevent a Potential Economic Loss of $400 Million to Nigeria” This followed the adoption of a motion on the need to
The ITU has given Nigeria three orbital slots to place the satellite in geostationary orbit.
This slot is essential for communications, broadcasting, weather monitoring, national defense, and other purposes.
Underscoring the importance of the motion, Mr Shagaya said: “Currently, only one of these slots is utilized through NigComSat-1, and if left unused by the December 6, 2024 deadline, the remaining two may be reassigned. there is.”
“The cost of acquiring new orbital slots is approximately $200 million and the loss of these slots will not only result in significant economic losses but will also hinder Nigeria’s technological progress and economic development.
“Many factors contribute to the underutilization of these slots, including financial limitations, inadequate technical infrastructure, and delays in policy implementation.”
The Kwara lawmaker noted that the importance of orbital slots goes beyond technological advancement and includes national security, disaster response, and navigation capabilities, while pointing out that the growing global demand for satellite services makes the status allocated to Nigeria permanent. It added that this could lead to severe deprivation.
He added: “It is imperative for Nigeria to expedite the satellite development process, secure the necessary funding and explore partnerships with private companies and the International Space Agency to make the most of these orbital slots. Yes,” he added.
“The House of Representatives recognizes that protecting Nigeria’s orbital slots is more than a technical aspect; it is a critical element of national security, economic advancement and global standing.
“Optimizing the use of these slots is critical to establishing Nigeria as a key player in the ever-changing space sector.”
After adopting the motion, the House called on the Federal Government to “prioritize the protection of Nigeria’s orbital slots and investment in satellite technology in order to make the best use of the orbital slots allocated to Nigeria by the impending deadline. I did,” he said.
It also recommended that the Federal Government establish a monitoring mechanism to ensure timely registration and renewal of orbital slots in Nigeria, monitor progress in utilization of orbital slots and ensure compliance with ITU regulations.
It also called on the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited and the National Space Research and Development Agency to step up efforts to develop and launch satellites occupying slots to prevent them from being confiscated.
It also directed the House Digital and Communications Technology Committee to conduct a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s current orbital slot usage and report within two weeks for further legislative action.
