The federal government has announced plans to establish independent supergrids in each of the 19 northern states.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja on Monday.
DAILY POST recalls that there was a power outage in the northern region since October 21.
This prolonged power outage caused serious concern to stakeholders across the country.
Mr Adelabu said the president had ordered the acceleration of repair works to restore power to northern Nigeria.
he said: “The world is moving. We are in the 21st century and the most effective way to provide uninterrupted, functional, stable and reliable electricity to northern Nigeria is to install solar-scale power plants in each northern state. We believe that it is through a distributed power model that embeds.
“All 20 states will be isolated and not be affected by each other.
“We have made progress in this regard as we have interested contractors and financial stakeholders ready to install 100 megawatts in each of the 20 northern states that can be expanded initially to 50 megawatts and then upgraded to 100 megawatts. .
“We are working on establishing a supergrid, which is a back-up to the optional grid. If there is a problem with the national grid, there will be an alternative grid to which power can be transmitted.
“The world is moving beyond a central grid. Grids need to be regionalized. We need a state grid that can isolate it.”
