The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) says the All Progressives Congress (APC) appears to have pocketed or swallowed the judiciary and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The association lamented the ruling party’s mannerisms and arrogant tendencies.
He said this posed a danger to the survival of the country’s constitutional democracy.
The group pointed out that leaders of the national ruling party were boasting that the party would win all future elections, adding that this was also the case before the Edo state gubernatorial election vote.
Through his statement, Mr. Huliwa appealed to both the country’s judiciary and INEC to protect the constitutionally created, protected and guaranteed institutions from being overwhelmed by the APC.
“The immediate risk inherent in this arrogant attitude by the All Progressives Congress is that the party will continue to use its control of the central government to rig the electoral process and illegally corner its electoral victories,” the group said. “If this happens, voter apathy will become even more pronounced.” It could be a totalitarian, one-party state, or democracy could collapse, giving way to anarchy. ”
The rights group called on Nigerians to “speak out and put pressure on INEC and the judiciary to avoid subordination to the political party that controls the central government.”
Mr Huliwa said INEC and the judiciary must not allow the APC or any political party to give the impression that they have been co-opted and swallowed.
The group, in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Mr. Emmanuel Onwubiko, said the APC National Chairman, Mr. Abdullahi Ganduje, confirmed that the ruling party would take control of the South-West geopolitical region, all future He continued to boast that his party would win the election. In the next election, we will be in the zone.
Therefore, Furiwa said, “As free, transparent and peaceful elections are the determining factor for achieving sustainable democracy and sustainable development, the APC deliberately designed and imposed illegal mechanisms for election manipulation. “I don’t think so,” he warned.
