Ali Ndume, the lawmaker representing Borno South, has petitioned the Senate to allow the widow of late Senator Ifeanyi Uba to succeed him as the lawmaker for Anambra South senatorial district.
He argued that there was a need to preserve Uba’s legacy and aspirations through his family.
Mr Ndume made this appeal during the General Assembly meeting held in honor of the late senator on Tuesday.
Citing historical precedent, Mr. Ndume argued that such a step would honor the late senator’s contributions to the Senate and ensure continuity in representing the constituency.
“Mr President, my appeal to you is that we keep the spirit and aspirations of Ifeanyi alive.
“This has happened before. After the great politician Chuba Okadigbo passed away, his wife Margery became a senator and carried on his legacy.
“Similarly, our First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, served this chamber largely on the goodwill of Lagosians and the legacy of her husband, a former governor.”
Ndume also mentioned other examples such as Senator Tokunbo Abiru, whose father served in the Senate in 1979, and Senator Abdulaziz Yardua, who continues the political legacy of the Yardua family.
He stressed that Senators Iyabo Obasanjo and Ede Dafinnon are also following in their father’s footsteps and representing their family legacy in the Senate.
Making his case, Mr Ndume said: “Fortunately, his wife of about 50 years is a great support system for him.
“I appeal to the President, and to all my distinguished colleagues, to support the idea of having a spiritual representative in this chamber for the president’s family.
“This will ensure the continuity and honor of Anambra South Senatorial District.”
