The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed dissatisfaction over the repeated delays in the National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings, as announced by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).
The Chairman of the Central Bank, Senator Adolphus Wabara, expressed the board’s concerns during an emergency meeting at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja.
Naija News recalls that the NWC recently declared the third consecutive postponement of the NEC meeting, with this latest postponement affecting the meeting originally scheduled for November 28, 2024.
Mr. Wahara criticized the NWC leadership led by the ambassador. Mr. Umar Damagum, for undermining the trust and confidence of party members through these persistent delays.
He stressed that repeated postponements have weakened the unity and democratic processes essential to the party’s success.
Mr. Wahara said: “I welcome you to the Emergency Council. I am honored to address this esteemed gathering whose commitment to the values and principles of our party is unwavering.
“We are convening today under difficult circumstances of our own making and out of common concern about the state of our great party.
“As custodians of the conscience and legacy of the PDP, it is our responsibility to maintain the integrity of this organization and ensure that it remains a beacon of hope for our democracy and good governance.
“I must express the Board’s deep disappointment at the continued change of direction of the National Working Committee (NWC) in convening National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings.
“This delay not only undermines the trust and confidence of party members, but also undermines the unity and democratic process that are the bedrock of the party.”
Mr. Wahara also called on the NWC to hold the NEC meeting as scheduled in February next year, stressing the importance of fulfilling promises made to party members.
The BoT Chairman went on to address the wide range of economic challenges facing Nigerians, especially under President Tinubu’s leadership.
He criticized the administration’s economic policies, which he believes are exacerbating the hardships faced by many people and pushing millions further into poverty.
“The Tinubu government’s harsh economic policies have further exacerbated the suffering of Nigerians. Poorly implemented economic reforms have pushed millions of people further into poverty. We must overcome this situation by presenting proposals and amplifying the voices of the suffering masses,” Wahara lamented.
Turning to internal issues within the party, Wabara urged PDP governors to prioritize unity and cooperation over personal ambitions.
He reiterated that the strength of the PDP lies in its collective efforts, with the cooperation of governors being essential to the success of the party especially at the state level.
“The strength of our party lies in our collective resolve, not in individual pursuits. We cannot allow our personal ambitions and differences to overshadow our common vision for a better Nigeria. Our governors are the bedrock of PDP’s success across the state and their synergy is essential to our collective progress,” he stressed.
The BoT reaffirmed its commitment to intra-party reconciliation, including efforts to engage former Governor Nyesom Wike to foster lasting peace within the party.
Mr. Wahara also used the occasion to convey his Christmas wishes and called for a renewed sense of unity and dedication to the future of the PDP.
“This is a time of hope, reflection and renewal. Let us use this season to rekindle the values of love, unity and sacrifice that Christmas embodies. We hope that the joy of this season will lead to a better Nigeria and a stronger May it motivate us to work harder for a better PDP,” Wabara concluded.
