The Labor Party (LP) has suffered a major setback when its gubernatorial candidate in the last Bayelsa state election, Udengus Eradiri, announced his resignation from the party along with his running mate, retired Brigadier General Benjamin Natus.
According to a report by The Nation, several local government chairmen of the Labor Party in Bayelsa followed suit and echoed the decision of Mr Eradiri and Mr Natus to leave the party.
In his official resignation letter dated December 8, 2024, addressed to the Yenagoa State Party Chairman, Mr. Eradiri stated that there is a need to continue his political career on a platform suitable for a leadership role like that of Mr. Bayelsa. He explained that his sexuality was the driving force behind his decision. need.
The letter, titled “Letter of Withdrawal as a Labor Party Member”, expresses Mr Eradiri’s gratitude to members of the party who supported his vision for a better Bayelsa and gave him the opportunity to contest as the party’s gubernatorial candidate. He was expressing his intentions.
“But unfortunately, we could not overcome the intrigues and challenges planted in the party leadership,” Eladiri lamented as he reflected on his campaign experience.
He acknowledged the bonds formed during his political journey in Bayelsa and highlighted their shared desire for influential leadership.
Mr Eradiri, who secured third place in the Bayelsa governorship race, revealed that his resignation had the support of his loyal supporters.
In a similar move, Vice Presidential candidate, Brigadier General Benjamin Natus (retired), also tendered his resignation, citing his desire to pursue a platform dedicated to propelling Bayelsa towards growth and prosperity.
Mr Natus praised the support of party members and said: “I am deeply grateful for the support and friendship of party members who shared my vision of a prosperous Bayelsa and graciously offered me the opportunity to serve as their deputy governorship candidate. This journey has been enriched with valuable experiences and insights. .”
Reflecting on his political involvement, Natus said he was honored by the time he spent working with dedicated colleagues and community members, saying his mission for progressive governance in Bayelsa remains intact.
Mr Eladiri confirmed that consultations were ongoing to identify a new political platform that could better serve the residents of Bayelsa.
He stressed that his decision to switch platforms was driven by the goal of promoting development in the state.
“We are in serious discussions and reaching out to all stakeholders to know which political party will join us next. It will become a thing,” Eladiri asserted.
