The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed Sylvester Ezeokenwa as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress Alliance (APGA).
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, said the decision was in line with the November 27 Supreme Court judgment that ended the leadership contest in Anambra State’s ruling party.
INEC National Chairman and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, said in a statement on Tuesday that Ezeokoyenwa’s name has been reinstated on the commission’s website.
It reads: “The Committee met today, Tuesday, December 17, 2024. The meeting addressed, among other issues, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) “Leadership issues were discussed."
“The Committee is served with the judgment of the Supreme Court in Appeal No. SC/CV/824/2024 APGA & ANOR vs OYE & ORS which upholds the bar on 27th November 2024. Sylvester (Sly) Ezeokenwa heads the party. serve.
“Following the Supreme Court’s judgment, the Commission has reinstated Mr. Barr. Mr. Ezeokenwa has assumed the position of APGA Chairman and his name has accordingly been reinstated on our website.”
Naija News reports that a five-member panel of the Supreme Court, in its judgment, ruled that Edzier Njoku had unfairly claimed the position of APGA chairman.
In a judgment read by Justice Stephen Ada, the commission said the 2021 judgment only granted declaratory relief and the relief was not executory.
He added that there was no enforcement order in the 2021 judgment.
