Afrobeats artist Seun Kuti, son of the late Fela Kuti, has taken aim at Africans who have migrated abroad in search of a better life. In a recent Instagram Live session, Seun accused Nigerians, Ghanaians and other Africans of not telling the truth about their experiences abroad.
Mr Soong suggested there was a tacit agreement among Africans living abroad to keep difficult aspects of their lives hidden. He believes this lack of transparency creates a misleading narrative about living abroad, which can have a negative impact on people back home who idealize living abroad.
Swoon said if Africans living abroad shared more about their challenges, it might deter many at home from wanting to leave. He emphasized the importance of honesty and transparency when sharing experiences, rather than a facade of perfection.
Mr Soong also criticized those who have been away for long periods of time, saying they have lost connection with their African traditions. He argued that long periods of absence can lead to a disconnection from one’s cultural roots, which is essential to maintaining a strong identity.
However, Seun also acknowledged that life back home is not always good for those who have left their hometowns. He acknowledged the complexity of the issue and highlighted the challenges faced by those who choose to remain in their home countries. By speaking out, Seun aims to spark a more nuanced conversation about the experiences of Africans living abroad.
