American University of Cairo emerges as Nigeria’s All-African University Championship winner

The American University of Cairo is the winner of the 11th All Africa University Games which concluded on September 29, 2024 at the LASU Sports Center, Lagos State University, Ojo.
The Egyptian team won 48 gold medals, 26 silver medals, and 8 bronze medals, defeating co-hosts LASU and UNILAG, who came in second and third place, respectively.
Speaking after a glittering closing ceremony held at the Lagos State University Sports Complex, Ojo today, the President of the University Athletics Association of Nigeria, Bawa Mohammed, revealed how the final medal standings will work.
“There are two ways to win. Nigeria won. By university, the American University of Cairo won. By county, Nigeria won. Because there are two ways: Combine the medals of the countries . Some countries win, some universities win. In terms of countries, Nigeria came first, and in terms of universities, Egypt came in first,” Mohammed said.
LASU won 28 gold, 30 silver and 26 bronze medals, while UNILAG won 25 gold, 23 silver and 40 bronze medals.
One of the innovations witnessed at the tournament was the use of video assistant referee VAR to assist soccer referees.
The 2024 competition, which was held under the auspices of the African University Sports Union (FASU), attracted 68 schools from 14 countries.
The next championship will be held by the American University of Cairo in 2026.
