The African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has launched the West Africa Regional Technical Advisory Committee (ReTAC), which aims to provide technical guidance and operational support to the West Africa Regional Coordination Center (WA RCC).
This is an important step toward improving regional coordination and preparedness to respond to public health emergencies.
In a statement signed by West Africa RCC Acting Regional Director Dr Helinda Themba, it was stated that the launch of ReTAC is an important milestone in the full operation of the RCC in West Africa. Mr Themba stressed that these efforts are important to promote regional preparedness and resilience to public health threats, while fostering cooperation between Member States, development partners and local health organizations.
“The establishment of ReTAC will serve as a platform for accountability and technical guidance in shaping the operational framework of the West African RCC,” said Themba. “This is an important milestone in strengthening the region’s capacity to respond to public health emergencies.”
The conference was attended by representatives from 11 of the 15 West African member states, centers of excellence, regional organizations and selected health development partners, and was dedicated to strengthening public health coordination and response efforts across the region. importance was emphasized. Mr. Themba thanked the Nigerian government for hosting the event and emphasized the need for regional cooperation in tackling emerging health challenges.
The launch of ReTAC is part of a broader effort by Africa CDC to strengthen community health coordination across the continent. Temba said four out of five regional coordinating centers across Africa have already set up similar committees, making West Africa the latest to follow suit. The new committee is expected to play a pivotal role in implementing strategies to strengthen public health systems and preparedness for future emergencies.
One of the important outcomes of the conference was the election of Mrs. Adama Drameh as Second Permanent Secretary of the Gambia Ministry of Health and the first Chairperson of ReTAC. Domingos Veiga Varela from Cape Verde was elected vice-chairman. “I am honored to lead this committee as we work together to implement a roadmap that will guide our region in addressing public health challenges,” said Drameh. , expressed his determination to guide the committee towards achieving its goals.
With the formal establishment of ReTAC, stakeholders look forward to a more efficient and timely approach to tackling public health threats in West Africa. Next steps include operationalizing the roadmap and tracking progress against the agreed strategy. The meeting highlighted the joint efforts of West African countries and partners to strengthen health systems and increase resilience to future health emergencies.
