The Nigerian government has assured consumers that current efforts to strengthen electricity generation and distribution will soon lead to lower electricity costs in the country.
The Minister of Power, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, gave this assurance when he paid a courtesy call on the Executive Director of the National Lottery Trust Fund, Mr. Tosin Adeyanju, in Abuja, where he led the management team of the fund.
Mr Adelabu noted that compared to other African countries such as Togo, Mali and Niger Republic, electricity prices in Nigeria remain the lowest.
He said low income levels in Nigeria make costs seem high for consumers.
The minister also said: “Given today’s commodity prices, it is much cheaper to use electricity than to run a generator using petrol or diesel.”
He stressed that current tariffs could be reduced as power generation and distribution is strengthened.
Mr. Adelabu further expressed the readiness of the Ministry and its associated agencies to collaborate and collaborate with the Trust Fund to achieve its goals.
The ministry’s renewable power project was established to address areas of the country not covered by the electricity grid, it said.
