Naija News reports that the LP parliamentary group led by Senator Tony Nwoyi has accused Soludo of manipulating the State and Local Government Joint Accounts Act, which is a Supreme Court ruling granting fiscal autonomy to the third tier. However, APGA members maintained that the governor was committed to the financial and administrative autonomy of the LG Assembly.
In a communiqué read out after the APGA parliamentarian meeting on Saturday evening, the caucus called on LP members to work with Governor Soludo to move Anambra State forward.
Leader of the House of Representatives APGA caucus, Pascal Agbodike, said the proposed Anambra State Local Government Management Act of 2024 has been “misconstrued as an attempt to undermine local government autonomy”.
The communiqué reads as follows: “Governor Soldo remains committed to ensuring good governance and accountability.
“He is dedicated to strengthening local government autonomy and promoting development and prosperity for all Anambra residents.
“Contrary to the claims of Labor MPs, the proposed legislation is consistent with Supreme Court judgments on the financial and administrative autonomy of local councils.”
Mr. Agbodike, who represents Ihiala Federal Constituency, said the allegations against Governor Soludo were “baseless and misplaced,” noting that the country’s current law gives each state the power to regulate grassroots government.
He said: “Article 7 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) clearly vests states with the power to establish, organize, finance and regulate local government councils.”
