The Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Adolphus Wabara, has declared that the party has lost its Rivers State candidacy.
In the backdrop of the local government elections held in the state, Mr Wabara declared that the PDP had shot itself in the foot.
Naija News reports that the Action Peoples Party (APP) has won 22 of the 23 chairperson seats, as declared by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) Chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (retd). Meanwhile, the Action Alliance recalls having won one municipality (the Ecce municipal area). ).
Reacting to the development, Wabara said in an interview with Vanguard that it is the first time in recent history that the ruling party in Rivers State, dominated by the PDP since 1999, has lost grassroots influence to a lesser-known party. I lamented that it was my first time.
“This is unprecedented in the recent history of local government elections where the ruling party and the governor’s party lost their grassroots organization. PDP shot itself in the foot. It means PDP has lost Rivers State both physically and literally,” Wabara said.
He said there were signs in the PDP but party leaders ignored them. He also added that the chances of PDP winning back the state in the 2027 elections are very low.
“We foresaw this happening and warned our key players, but instead of heeding our advice, they were ridiculed. Now the consequences are clear for everyone to see.” Mr. Wahara said.
However, the PDP BoT chairman said despite the results of the Rivers State local government elections, the party can still learn lessons and change its position ahead of the 2027 elections.
“I believe we have learned the hard way, but it is not too late. We must come together as a family, resolve our differences and strive to come out even stronger in 2027. ” Mr. Wahara concluded.
