The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese, has disclosed that members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the House of Representatives have donated free of charge to the campaign fund of Edo State Governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebolo.
According to a Naija News report, Mr Agbese was accused of a total of N1 million being deducted from the allowances of APC MPs without his consent to support Mr Okpebolo and his then vice-presidential candidate, Rep. Dennis Idahosa. This was revealed in response. of the representative.
However, in an interview with Punch, Agbese said the decision to support Okpeboro and Idahosa was taken spontaneously at a meeting attended by APC members.
He noted that the united determination of the House Majority Caucus to support this cause led to the emergence of a chairperson to lead the fundraising committee.
Mr Agbese claimed that none of the members of the Green Chamber, who were elected on the platform of the ruling party, were forced to part with any money to support Mr Okpebolo’s governorship ambitions.
He said, “The report is not correct. The Senate had decided to support the then gubernatorial candidate and now the governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpeboro. Also, the then deputy governor and now the deputy governor-elect, Dennis – Mr. Idahosa is also one of us and a member of the House of Representatives, so we believe it is appropriate to support this ticket.
“No one was forced to object to the report. The Speaker was not even present at the meeting. Therefore, it appears that he unilaterally ordered deductions from members’ allowances without their knowledge. The claim is beside the point.
“If the members were indeed disgruntled or forced to donate, they would have protested the moment it was first reported that the APC House of Representatives caucus was contributing to their campaign funds. Why now?
“There was a quorum at the meeting and the Vice-Chairman, Mr. Rt. I’ve made it this far.”
