Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro (PDP/Benue South) has described Saturday’s local government elections in Benue as a rape of democracy.
Mr. Moro made this clarification in a statement by his Media Adviser, Mr. Emmanuel John, which he made available to reporters in Makurdi on Sunday.
NAN reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has won 23 chairpersonships and all 276 municipal council seats, as announced by the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC) on Sunday.
The Senate Minority Leader said reports from voting bodies across the Senate district indicate the election was not held.
He said election materials and BSIEC officials were not found anywhere in the area.
Moro said he was disappointed that Governor Hyacinth Aria did not uphold truth and due process as promised during the campaign.
“I expected the governor, as a priest, to drive a paradigm shift by doing what is right, rather than referencing or imitating what has been done wrong in the past.
“Democracy is hotly contested and some people are paying a huge price. We cannot allow anti-democratic forces to destroy the system,” Moro said.
He enjoined members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to remain calm as all legally possible steps will be taken to challenge the election in a court of competent jurisdiction.
