The leadership crisis within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continues to deepen after the faction’s acting national party chairman, Ahmed Muhammad, formally accepted the position in a letter to party members.
A letter dated October 13, 2024 released by the suspended PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, expressed Mr. Muhammad’s gratitude for the support he has received since taking office.
He stressed the need to seriously consider the management of the party and its effectiveness as an opposition force in the current political climate.
In the letter, Muhammad said: “The domestic situation within our party over the past few days has caused us to deeply reflect on the management of the PDP, especially in relation to our role as an opposition party, especially at this critical time for our country. There is a need.” And in the true spirit of our Founding Fathers’ mission and vision of equity, fairness, and justice, we will operate overall as a constitutionally compliant organization. ”
He also cited internal struggles within the party, acknowledging that the conflict had weakened the party’s ability to function as a strong opposition party.
“Unfortunately, we must admit that we have fallen short of fulfilling the important role expected of a vigorous opposition party in a democracy,” he wrote.
Mr. Muhammad reiterated the importance of returning to the founding principles of the PDP and assured party members of his determination to lead the party in line with the constitution.
His immediate focus is on restoring trust among members by ensuring that the long-postponed National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting takes place on October 24, 2024.
He also called on the North Central Zone to recommend a candidate to replace former national chairman, Senator Iyorukia Ayu.
Meanwhile, the PDP’s leadership crisis has been further complicated by a recent court ruling that prevented the Umar Damagum-led National Working Committee (NWC) from removing Mr. Muhammad as acting national chairman, and the party’s progress. Adding yet another difficulty to the struggle inside.
