AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – Ruben visits with an Amarillo band that shares a love of bluegrass music with the Texas Panhandle.
Bomb City Bluegrass manager Tanna Murphy said bluegrass music is hard to come by in the Panhandle. Apparently it’s popular around Kentucky.
But Tanna says she can’t go anywhere and perform unless someone tells her they like bluegrass music. She says she’s had a great response from them.
Bomb City Bluegrass played together officially for about 13 months, but also played together casually in local bluegrass circles for several years.
“So we started young. We started taking lessons at Amarillo College’s violin program. We started it when we were about 4 years old. I think I continued until I was 12,” said Abram Murphy, guitarist and vocalist for Bomb City Bluegrass.
Abram said their grandfather gave them an old mandolin and they began learning how to play it. Later, they also learned other instruments.
“Usually the band consists of brothers Eli Murphy and Abram Murphy, and sometimes Cyrus Murphy joins in on fiddler vocals. And the couple we play with is Tim and Becky McGay. ” Tanna said.
Tanna says she has taken some lessons with Tim and has performed in local bluegrass circles with Tim and Becky. They asked them to join the band and now they are both part of the band.
“It’s a very inclusive community. It’s very, very welcoming. It’s a genre of music that isn’t really well known, so it’s interesting to see how many people are enjoying it.” Abram said.
Abram says he wouldn’t be where he is today without the support of his parents.
“I wouldn’t have had an instrument to play. I wouldn’t be able to drive myself anywhere. So they drove me there and what I do is… It’s great to know that you support us,” Abram said.
