Dalyeop Chorom, a Labor Party (LP) House of Representatives member from Plateau State, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Naija News reports that the lawmaker representing Barkin Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency announced his departure from the party through a letter read out by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen during the House of Representatives meeting on Tuesday.
In a statement regarding his departure from the party, the chairman indicated that the lawmaker had made the decision to leave the LP and join the APC after much consideration, citing the ongoing turmoil within the party as a key factor.
He expressed that the political welfare of his constituents was his top priority and asserted his belief that he could serve them more effectively within the ruling party.
In response, the House Minority Leader, Rep. Kingsley Chinda (D-Rivers), raised the point citing Article 68(1)(d) of the Constitution, declaring the defection to be null and void. did.
He then asked the House of Representatives to reject the lawmaker’s resignation from the party.
Mr. Chinda said, “We cannot continue to put the cart before the horse.That letter you read was incorrect.”
The minority leader stressed that members must provide evidence of their resignation from the party. However, the Chair said he had considered all relevant information and was satisfied with the documents provided by MPs.
In response, Chinda argued that if the chairman is truly satisfied, he should abide by the constitutional provisions regarding the status of members who leave the party and join other parties.
Furthermore, “If you say that the letter he wrote is appropriate, you are declaring his seat vacant.”
The chair said that after reviewing the presentations made by the members, he determined that the minority leader was unusual.
Similarly, Anambra MP George Ozodinobi, who represents the Labor Party, expressed disappointment over the defection, noting that there was no internal conflict in the Labor Party.
Senator Samuel Bako Lalong was present in the chamber to hear the announcement regarding the defection of members from Plateau State.
Naija News recalls that last Thursday, five MPs, comprising four from the Labor Party and one from the Peoples Democratic Party, migrated to the All Progressives Congress.
The four Labor MPs who defected to the APC are Tochukwu Chinedu Okere MP for Imo, Donatus Mathews MP for Kaduna, Akiba Bassey MP for Cross River, and Esosa Iyawe MP for Edo. .
Additionally, Rep. Elhiatake Ibori-Suenu, daughter of former Delta State Governor James Ibori, has switched allegiance from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.
