AR Rahman speaks out against misuse of AI (AFP) AR Rahman talks about the dangers of AIIn a recent interview with The Week, Luhrmann spoke about remixing and re-imagining songs and expressed his disapproval of this trend. But he added that he feels the misuse of AI is a much bigger problem. In the same interview, he called AI evil and said, “An even greater evil is that people misuse AI and don’t pay the composer even if they borrow his style. Serious ethics. We need to put a bell on this cat because it could lead to problems and we could lose our jobs.”
The composer acknowledged that AI has advantages, but added that composing songs still requires a “human mind and a philosophical mind.” Many creators are using AI tools to recreate different songs with different singers’ voices, raising questions not only about copyright and creative ownership but also about ethics.
Rahman and the history of AIInterestingly, Rahman had used AI to recreate the voices of late singers Bamba Bakiya and Shahul Hameed in Laal Salaam’s song ‘Timili Yezudda’. However, the composer asked permission from the singer’s family and revealed that he was also paid.
In the past, singers Neeti Mohan and Kavita Krishnamurthy have also spoken out about the misuse of AI tools in music. Speaking to HT City earlier this year, Neeti said, “Yes, we are using technology and software (to enhance voices and music), but we are using AI to recreate the voices of late singers.” “We will not use the voices of existing singers without their permission.” I’ve heard that some legalities are being considered to prevent it from being abused in the future. Once it gets to a certain stage, people will know that it’s not a good choice. ”
Rahman’s latest works include music for the Tamil film ‘Raayan’ and Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’, both of which received praise and became chartbuster songs. His upcoming works include “Chava” and “Thug Life.”
