“Anora” won the 97th Academy Awards on Sunday, a drama about a sex worker who married a spoiled son of a Russian oligarch, winning five Oscars, including the best award.
Sean Baker, the maverick behind “Anora,” was recognized for producing, directing, editing and writing the film’s script, becoming the first person to win four Oscars for the same film. Baker’s latest film is a critical favorite, and its Oscar success is a statement-making moment for Neon, the indie distributor behind “Anola” that led “Anola” to “Anola” in 2020.
Adrian Brody (“Brutal”) and Mikey Madison (“Anola”) have won top acting honors. The previous winner of “The Pianist,” Brody plays a fantastic but troubled architect, and Madison scores a shaky victory with the portrayal of exotic dancers under pressure to get abolition from his rich husband.
Kieran Culkin (“A Real Pain”) was named the best supporting actor in his turn as a troubled man on a tour of Poland along with his cousin, while Zoe Saldaña (“Emilia Pérez”) won the best supporting actress in her performance as a lawyer who helps the cartel leader undergo pro-gender surgery.
Among other major winners, the family drama “I’m Still Here,” set up during Brazil’s military dictatorship, was named Best International Feature. “Flow” is a fantasy adventure from Latvia, and has picked up the best animation features, efforts to survive the cat flood.
Former late-night television staple Conan O’Brien became a podcasting imprezario and hosted the Oscar for the first time.
It was Baker who gave the most passionate defense of the filmmaker’s tradition.
