Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa of Ondo State has described the withdrawal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from local government elections in the state as a despicable act.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday after voting at Polling Station 5 in Ugbo Ward 4 in Ilaje Local Government Area, Mr Ayedatiwa criticized the PDP’s decision, suggesting it may have stemmed from fear of defeat. did.
“It is cowardly for the PDP to withdraw. They participated in the entire process. ODIEC announced the election schedule on time, but we do not know the reason for it (withdrawal). It could be fear of losing. Everything. The elections have their own strategies and other political parties are also participating. So whatever the reason was for their withdrawal, I don’t know about it,” he said.
Mr. Ayedatiwa stressed that this election is an important step towards strengthening grassroots governance and development in the state.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring the effective operation of the local government system in accordance with the law.
“Local government is critical to grassroots development. This election clearly demonstrates our commitment to strengthening governance at this level,” the governor said.
The governor also commended the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) for the smooth conduct of the polls.
“I just voted without any sense of danger. This is exactly what happened during the Nov. 16 gubernatorial election, which was deemed free and fair. Materials arrived early, security was in place, , the citizens are also participating here. At the end of the day, just like in the last election, we don’t expect anything more,” Aiyedatiwa said.
In a related development, the Deputy Governor of the state, Mr. Olayide Adelami, cast his vote at Unit 16 Igboroko, Ward 3, Owo Local Government Area at 9:45am.
Mr Aderami praised the high turnout of voters and urged them to vote en masse for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“The turnout is amazing. I encourage all voters to vote and support APC for the continued development of the state,” Aderami said.
