Chris Brown has sold more than 94,000 tickets for his upcoming concert in South Africa, a country with one of the highest rates of femicide and gender-based violence in the world.・Brown’s visit was criticized by women’s rights activists.
The BBC reported that the country’s advocacy group Women for Change has launched a petition calling for Brown’s performance to be canceled. So far, the petition has reached 20,000 signatures.
The magazine quotes executive director Sabina Walter as saying: “When I saw the news that Chris Brown was coming to South Africa, I was shocked and very disappointed.
“This petition was started to send a strong message that we will not tolerate celebrating individuals with a history of violence against women. , it sends a harmful message that fame and power trump accountability.”
Brown has a history of facing allegations of violence against women. In 2009, he pleaded guilty to assaulting his then-girlfriend, Rihanna, after an argument during the Grammy Awards ceremony. At the time, he was sentenced to five years’ probation, community service and counseling. He has previously been banned from entering countries including the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
