Bangladesh captain Nazimul Hossain Shanto won the toss and chose to bat for the first of two Tests against South Africa in Mirpur on Monday.
The Test will be Bangladesh’s first international cricket match since a student-led revolution toppled authoritarian Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August.
The series will give points to the World Test Championship, with the final to be held in England next year. Currently, South Africa is in 6th place in the standings and Bangladesh is in 7th place.
South Africa will be captained by Aiden Markram as Themba Bavuma is absent due to injury.
The second Test will be held on October 29 in Chittagong (also known as Chattogram).
