Binance’s head of financial crime compliance, Tigran Gambarian, has left Nigeria after eight months in detention.
The world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange made the announcement in a statement shared with The Punch on Thursday.
“Today, American citizen Tigran Gambarian departed Nigeria to return to his family after eight months of illegal detention.
“Gambalyan was allowed to leave Kuje Prison last night. His health condition deteriorated significantly while in prison. He will now finally be able to receive the medical care he so desperately needs.” the exchange said.
The development follows the judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday dismissing money laundering charges brought against Gambarian by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
In court, the EFCC explained that the case could not continue on the final adjournment date due to Mr. Gambarian’s deteriorating health condition.
An investigation by the Nigeria Correctional Service, supported by the Office of the National Security Adviser, showed that Gambarian's condition had deteriorated to the point where he could barely walk without the aid of a wheelchair.
In response to this development, Gambarian’s wife, Yuki, expressed relief at his release.
“I am so relieved that this day has finally come. The past eight months have been a living nightmare. I wish his release had not taken so long and his health had deteriorated so much. I wish I hadn’t, but now we can focus on healing as a family.
“We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the United States government for their efforts in securing his release. We would also like to thank everyone who has helped us during this ordeal. This day will never come. There were moments when I was worried that it wouldn’t happen, but Tigran’s supporters gave me hope and strength.
“The road ahead for Tigran’s recovery will be difficult and we are grateful for the time and space to focus on it. Our children will be reunited with their father. I can’t wait,” she said.
In February, Nigerian authorities detained Gambariyan and his colleague Nadeem Anjarwala, a 37-year-old British-Kenyan who is Binance’s Africa regional manager.
Both men were charged with money laundering charges involving $35 million initiated by anti-corruption authorities.
Anjalwala successfully escaped from custody on March 22, 2024, while Gambalyan was arraigned in court on April 8.
