What makes the roll call of past MITS Award winners unique is that throughout our history, we have recognized both extraordinary figures and celebrities who have worked behind the scenes in the music industry.
Of course, their contribution is obvious in that they make it all happen from the beginning, but what makes them even more remarkable is that in doing so they create so many opportunities for others. It is these individual talents that we want to respect.
Jason Iley MBE has long been deserving of the MITS Award for this reason. His 30-year career has seen him become one of Britain’s most widely respected executives, from product manager at Epic, to roles at Universal Music and Mercury Records, to running Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. .
In 2014 he returned to where it all started, taking on the role of Chairman and CEO of Sony Music UK & Ireland. He has been with the company ever since, making him the longest-serving chair in the company’s UK history. No matter where his journey takes him, his commitment to finding, nurturing, and championing a new generation of talent remains consistent and has seen him break out some of the biggest acts of all time.

But the number of artists he has supported and brought to the forefront is only a small part of what makes Jason stand out. He has also proven equally dedicated to developing a new and diverse generation of executives behind the scenes in the industry.
Under Jason’s leadership, Sony Music launched groundbreaking initiatives, including a women-focused A&R Academy and a child care program aimed at increasing the representation of women in senior roles.
Significant investment is being made in mental health, with a new role created for the in-house director of artist and employee wellbeing, and working with charity Mind to ensure mandatory mental health management for all employees. Training is provided. He also oversees the UK arm of Sony Music’s Social Justice Fund, which supports anti-racist initiatives such as improving access to music education in grassroots communities and supporting criminal justice reform. We are awarding £2.2 million in grants to supporting charities. It had a huge impact across the entire spectrum of the industry and beyond.
A passion for contributing to society through music is what the MITS Award stands for. As we celebrate Jason’s legacy at MITS on November 4th, we will also be raising vital funds for the charities Britt Trust and Nordoff and Robbins in the same spirit. We look forward to celebrating with you all.
