News 12 had an early look at a new performance venue opening this weekend in Melrose. Organizers say the venue will preserve a tradition in our borough that is sometimes forgotten.
The new Bronx Music Hall features a 250-seat theater, dance and recording studios, post-production rooms, and an outdoor amphitheater.
Established by the nonprofit organization WHEDco, the hall emphasizes that the borough’s musical influence extends far beyond hip-hop, once the center of doo-wop, R&B, Latin jazz, and salsa in New York City. The purpose is
WHEDco leaders say they will offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year, including classes and performances for all ages, to keep the Melrose community at the center of their activities.
BMHC co-artistic director Elena Martinez and multiple Grammy-nominated percussionist Bobby Sanabria will curate the program at Bronx Music Hall.
The grand opening weekend begins on Friday, October 18th, with a panel discussion at 5:30 p.m., Bronx hip-hop legends Grandmaster Kaz and MC Sharrock, and Bronx DJ collective Uptown Vinyl Supreme at 8 p.m. and a musical performance by The Afro begins. -Haitian roots music band Congo.
