The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), as it celebrates Nigeria’s 64th anniversary of independence, has called on the Federal Government to prioritize social justice in governance, as freedom of religion remains a fundamental right that underpins the nation’s ethos.

CAN said in a statement by President Archbishop Daniel Okoh in Abuja that the national development agenda must continue to focus on infrastructure development, economic growth and youth empowerment.

“This momentous occasion provides us with a profound opportunity to reflect on our journey as a nation, acknowledge our achievements and renew our commitment to the ideals of unity, peace and progress,” he said.

“Our beloved country, Nigeria, is a shining example of the strength found in diversity.Despite challenges that test our resolve, we remain resilient and united in our common commitment to the common good. We continue to demonstrate our efforts.

“As we reflect on our history, let us renew our dedication to promoting national unity and social harmony. Regardless of religion, we embrace peaceful coexistence and mutual respect and understanding. It is essential that we work together to build a distinctive future.

“In recent years, we have seen great progress in addressing the security challenges posed by terrorism and banditry. These threats severely impact many communities, including Christians, and we commends the efforts of the security forces to protect the nation.

“However, we must remain vigilant and continue to support efforts that promote the safety and security of all Nigerians and ensure that all our citizens can live without fear.

“Social justice remains the cornerstone of our national aspirations. We must address the pressing challenges of education, employment, and fair opportunity for all. We impact every part of our communities and society. By prioritizing education and creating employment opportunities, we empower young people and lay the foundations for a prosperous future.

“Religious freedom is a fundamental right that underpins our national spirit.

As we celebrate our independence, let us reaffirm our commitment to mutual understanding and mutual respect. This is essential not only for Christians but for all religious groups in Nigeria. A society that respects and respects religious diversity will undoubtedly thrive in unity and peace.

“Our national development agenda must continue to focus on infrastructure development, economic growth, and youth empowerment. These efforts are critical to the development of the Christian community and the nation as a whole. Invest in infrastructure. By empowering young people, we pave the way for sustainable growth and a brighter future for everyone.

“As we celebrate our 64th anniversary of independence, let us remain courageous and hold fast to hope, unity and a common vision for a better Nigeria.Together we will overcome the challenges before us and May God lead us to lasting peace and prosperity.”
