As Nigeria celebrates its 64th anniversary of independence, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on all Nigerians to reflect on the country’s journey and reaffirm its commitment to unity, peace and progress.
In a statement yesterday, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh stressed the importance of recognizing Nigeria’s rich diversity.
Mr. Oko said Nigeria is a shining example of strength in diversity, highlighting the resilience and common commitment that has characterized Nigeria amidst numerous challenges.
The archbishop praised recent efforts to address security threats, especially in light of terrorism and banditry, which have severely affected many communities, especially Christians.
He called for continued vigilance and support in efforts to protect the right of all Nigerians to live without fear.
Speaking on important social justice issues, the CAN President emphasized the urgent need to improve education and employment opportunities, especially for the country’s youth.
“By prioritizing these areas, we will not only empower our youth but also lay the foundation for a prosperous future,” Okoh said.
Mr. Oko reiterated the importance of religious freedom, urging all Nigerians to embrace mutual respect and understanding, and reminding them that societies that respect religious diversity are more likely to thrive in harmony.
“This is essential not only for Christians but for all religious groups in Nigeria,” he said.
He also called for national development, emphasizing infrastructure development, economic expansion and youth empowerment.
Mr. Okoh said targeted investments in these regions are vital to the Christian community and the broader Nigerian public.
He urged Nigerians to be courageous in spirit, remain hopeful and strive towards a common vision for a better Nigeria.
“Together we can overcome the challenges before us and celebrate the richness of our diverse heritage,” he said.
