Hollywood actor John Amos, known for his roles in “Coming to America” and “Good Times,” has passed away.
The late military veteran’s son, Kelly Christopher Amos, revealed in a statement Tuesday that the actor died of natural causes on Aug. 21.
The deceased actor was 84 years old.
He described his father as a man with a “heart of gold,” adding that his legacy “lives on.”
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our father. He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold, and was loved all over the world,” the statement said.
“Many fans consider him the father of television. He lived a good life, and his legacy will live on in his outstanding work in television and film as an actor.”
Born in New Jersey on December 27, 1937, Amos started out as a soccer player, not an actor. His entertainment career began when he was cast as weather forecaster Gordie Howard on WJN-TV’s The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
Amos began acting seriously in 1970. His career spanned more than 50 years in television and film.
His film resume includes “The World’s Greatest Athlete” (1973), “Let’s Do It Again” (1975), “The Beastmaster” (1982), and “Die Hard 2” (1990).
