A Federal High Court in Kano has once again removed all 44 local government chairpersons and municipal council candidates of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Naija News reports that the court headed by Justice Simon Amobeda on Friday dismissed all NNPP candidates submitted to the State Independent Electoral Commission for Saturday’s election.
The judge issued the order on October 8, 2024, following an initial subpoena filed by the partisan party (NNPP) and a lawyer. Muhammad Babayo, through their advisor, Sunday Olowomoran Esq., have submitted to the election management body, Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KAANSIEC), only the list of candidates from their faction as genuine candidates. I was instructed to admit it.
The defendants in this case are the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the first defendant, KAANSIEC as the second defendant, and the Inspector General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of Security Services (DSS) as the third and fourth defendants.
According to Vanguard, a copy of the court order reads: “The first defendant (INEC) is hereby enjoined from publishing the voter registration of the second defendant in order to conduct the elections scheduled for October 26, 2024.”
“The second defendant (KANSIEC) is hereby directed to accept as genuine and subsisting the list of NNPP candidates submitted by the party’s recognized national chairman, Dalhatu Shehu Usman, which, as per the party constitution, We reject any list of candidates” submitted by others for the 2024 Kano State Local Government Elections.
“The 3rd and 4th defendants (IGP and Director General of DSS) are immediately enjoined from providing security and protection to the planned election site on October 26, 2024.”
