Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu swiftly shuffled candidates for the South East Development Commission (SEDC) within 24 hours. The escalating power struggle was revealed.
On Friday, Mr. Tinubu announced the first list of candidates through a statement by his Special Assistant on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, appointing Mr. Tinubu. Emeka Atuma is appointed SEDC Chairman of the Board. However, by Saturday, an amended list was released replacing Mr Atuma with Mr Barr. Dr. Emeka Nworgu (Ph.D.) has been appointed as chairman, sparking speculation about internal conflict.
Sources told SaharaReporters that the original list reflected the wishes of the All Progressives Congress (APC) South East leadership, led by Governor Uzodinma, who had supported Atuma and other candidates in the region.
However, Vice-Chairman Kalu reportedly lobbied for a change and was successful in fielding his preferred candidate.
“There is a battle for supremacy over appointments. The initial list containing Emeka Atuma’s name was submitted by Governor Hope Uzodinma and the APC South-East leadership, but for reasons unknown, Benjamin Kalu decided to change the list. including his own candidates,” the source said on condition of anonymity. .
The revised list reportedly includes four people nominated solely by Kalu, excluding other South East officials.
These candidates are Mr. Barr; Mr. Emeka Nwolgu will become Chairman, Mr. Stanley Ohajuluka will become Executive Director of Finance, Mr. Clifford Ogbede will become Executive Director, and Mr. Toby Okechukwu, Chief of Staff of Karoo, will become Executive Director of Projects. .
Other positions on the board were also adjusted in Chairman Tinubu’s revised list. Among others, Mr. Anthony Ugbo, Mr. Obinna Obiekweye and Dr. Daniel Ikechukwu Ugwuja replaced their respective positions, while several other candidates remained.
Appointments still require Senate confirmation.
