Thirteen governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will meet today to discuss the internal crisis in the party that worsened on Friday following the emergence of the factional PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Yayari Mohammed.
Naija News reports that the move to remove the PDP Acting National Chairman, Mr. Umar Damagum from his duties, has divided PDP governors, with the PDP Governors Forum Chairman, Mr. Bala Mohammed leading six other governors to remove Damagum. It was reported that they are seeking his replacement.
Sources who spoke to Punch on condition of anonymity said the main topic of today’s governor’s meeting was reconciliation between Damagum, an ally of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and faction chairman Yayari Mohammed’s camp. He said that this is a possibility.
“The governors are scheduled to meet on Monday. The meeting will consider the actions taken by both groups, the Damagum faction and the Mohammedan faction of the NWC. There will be extensive discussion on last week’s suspension," he said. According to the information I have gathered, it will be decided whether the suspensions from both sides will be upheld or revoked, which could lead to a vote between the two sides.
“They need to decide the fate of both factions in the NWC. It will decide which faction will chair the NEC on October 24th and will also have a huge impact on whether the NEC meeting will proceed. ”Basically, the NWC and NEC are the main issues that the governor will address.
“Governors are also divided, as you know, the Bauchi governor and some others are against Damagum, who is an ally of Wike, while Mr. Makinde, Mr. Fintiri and Mr. Mutofan are pro- “We are leading the Damagum faction. Despite the divisions, they will engage in heart-to-heart dialogue, reach a conclusion on true NWC leadership, and strive to ensure that the NEC meeting takes place as scheduled.”
Another party leader also told the publication that the governors were trying to ease tensions within the party.
“The governors will meet tomorrow (Monday) and the main agenda will be to find solutions to the issues affecting the PDP at all levels,” the official said.
“What they will do is agree on a framework that captures the interests of both groups and all stakeholders and helps reduce tensions and recommit to the party leadership.
“The NEC on October 24th will take place as scheduled. It has been cast in stone and we will move forward.”
