Popular Afrobeats star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has revealed that his passion for music led to his success in the industry despite having opportunities to pursue corporate jobs.
The 31-year-old singer, who graduated from Oakland University in Alabama with a degree in business administration, spoke at Life After School, an event sponsored by the Noela Foundation, and discussed her unconventional journey into the music industry.
The “Timeless” hitmaker also acknowledged his privileged background, but stressed that a music career is a personal choice.
The Afrobeats star also urged his audience to follow their passions just like he did.
“I am living proof of a successful after-school person. I feel the need to share my experience. Naturally, I entered showbiz after leaving school. But I have friends and I have a brother and my father runs a company. There is also a school called Adeleke University from which students graduate. There are also companies that recruit students after school,” he said.
“I went to school for about five years because I had to take time off to pursue music. I’ve been chasing my dreams. My family comes from a family where you go to school and then go straight to work. Either work for my father or find a job elsewhere. I was the one who went the other way.
“For my brothers, I’ve seen what their lives are like after school. Some success is immediate, others take time. My brother works in our company in the department that recruits students, and most of them are from universities. Here in Nigeria, how do people put their details on their resumes? I’ve seen it.
