Drake has finally addressed his ongoing legal dispute with Universal Music Group (UMG) over allegations surrounding Kendrick Lamar’s song “Not Like Us.”
The Canadian rapper made headlines for filing pre-litigation claims against UMG and Spotify. In his filing, Drake claimed that the two worked together to artificially amplify the success of “Not Like Us,” a diss track widely believed to have been directed at him. Many fans considered the song to be Kendrick’s definitive response to a long-rumored feud between the two.
“One Dance” singer Chris Blake has remained relatively quiet on the subject, other than hinting at it in a freestyle, but a DM exchange between the rapper and Chris Blake recently surfaced online. , which was quickly deleted, escalated the situation. In that exchange, Drake offered insight into his motivations and frustrations.
Commenting on his decision to take legal action, the 38-year-old wrote:
“I mean, I don’t know the details, Mother. I’m just giving you an outside perception. My opinion is that I think there’s a better way.
Me and Universal are like Nike funding a campaign about LeBron cheating on his wife…not Adidas or Reebok…Nike, the company he’s been with since its inception. My situation is not terrible.
All the people who tried this label before me were so eccentric that I dismissed them as crazy and didn't have to pay for their sins and mistakes. I intend to change that and make the building a safer place for all artists moving forward. ”
