Mr. Ladi Adebutu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the 2023 Ogun State governorship election, has been arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS), according to a statement from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The Ogun State Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Kayode Adebayo, confirmed the detention of Mr. Adebutu in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Monday.
Mr. Adebayo said Mr. Adebutu was reportedly invited by the DSS for questioning in connection with the unrest during the local government elections held on Saturday, November 16, 2024.
“This is to inform members of our great political party, the Peoples Democratic Party, that our leader has indeed been detained by the DSS on charges that are yet to be disclosed,” Adebayo said. Ta.
He urged party members and supporters to remain calm, adding that Adebutu has expressed confidence in the process.
He said: “The principal called for calm to all members, supporters and well-wishers and reassured them that this challenge will be overcome. It is a sacrifice for democracy.”
Efforts to secure Mr. Adebutu’s release, including requests for personal recognizance and surety bail, had failed as of 10 p.m. Monday.
Adebayo added that his legal team has been informed and further action will be taken on Tuesday morning.
The PDP also called on lawmakers and the general public to act peacefully and patiently until the issue is resolved.
