Edo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Caretaker Committee Chairman Tony Agiegbemi has on Monday dismissed claims by Governor Okoyeboro that some party leaders siphoned off N12 billion from local government chairmen in 15 months.
The governor made the accusation while addressing acting local government chairmen and others in his office on Tuesday, sparking widespread debate within his party.
Reacting to the allegation, Mr Agiegbemi called on the governor to provide concrete evidence to support his claims.
“No such funds were handed over to the PDP leaders by the suspended council chairmen,” Agiegbemi said.
He also advised governors not to take the law into their own hands and urged them to refer such matters to state anti-corruption agencies.
Mr. Agiegbemi said, “No such funds have been handed over to PDP leaders and we call on the governor to produce evidence to substantiate that claim.” He needs to be specific about who got what, when, how, and from whom.
“As the state chairman, I take it upon myself to state that I am not aware of any such money being given to anyone.The steps the governor is taking to justify the illegal suspension of the chairman are unreasonable It is.
“Even if money is paid to someone, we expect the governor to report it to anti-corruption agencies for investigation. We are in a country and a state where the rule of law should be a priority. .
“The governor is just throwing numbers around and disrespecting the Edo State governorship.”
