Former Presidential Spokesperson, Doyin Okupe, has confronted Peter Obi, the Labor Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, over the “Emi Locan” mantra used by President Bola Tinubu during his campaign.
Okupe said Tinubu’s “Emi Lokan” comment before the 2023 elections was not a demand for the presidency, but rather an appeal to Yoruba delegates ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries. It is said that he appealed to the public to choose a candidate.
Naija News reports that Peter Obi, in a recent podcast, accused the Yoruba community of allegedly demanding the presidency of Nigeria through Tinubu, adding that the country has been plagued since Tinubu came to power in May 2023. He recalls taunting them about the difficulties they faced.
Obi's statement has received a variety of reactions and comments.
In his reaction, Okupe, who was once the executive director of Obi’s presidential campaign team, said the former Anambra State governor’s suggestion was out of line.
Okupe wrote on his X Platform (formerly Twitter) account on Monday: “Obi got ‘EMI LO KAN’ wrong”
“As a presidential candidate, Tinubu appealed for the Yoruba Ogun State delegation to vote for the APC Convention.
“He who was instrumental in building the party and also helping make Buhari president, declares that I (not a Yoruba) will be the next successor.”
