Former Presidential Spokesperson, Doyin Okupe, has said he could never defame Peter Obi, the Labor Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate.
Mr. Okupe appeared as a guest on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Monday and said he was part of Mr. Obi’s political rise and has a sentimental attachment to Mr. Obi, thus destroying what he has so hard built. He said he could not.
Mr Okupe disagreed with recent comments on Mr Peter Obi’s statement on President Bola Tinubu’s popular slogan “Emi Lokan”, denying attacking Mr Obi but speaking the truth on such matters He said he was responsible.
He claimed that Mr. Obi misunderstood his comment that Yoruba people were referring to Emirokan slogans, saying that Mr. Tinubu had told members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State about him at the party convention. He added that his remarks were meant to encourage people to vote.
“I cannot hate Peter Obi. I have sentimental feelings towards Peter Obi. Peter Obi is my project and I am part of the people who built Peter Obi. There is, and you cannot publicly denounce it and bring down the house,” Okupe said on the show.
“But, you know, when the sensibilities of some of us are affected, especially when it comes to regional issues, when we criticize the entire Yoruba nation, I am an elder statesman and a Lord I am Yoruba.
“If you cannot tell the truth at this age, there is no point in living. What Peter Obi said is wrong, Emirokan should ask the people of Ogun State if they buy bread cheaply. Ta.
“When Mr. Bola Tinubu said Emilokan, he was not addressing the nation, he was not addressing a rally, he was going to the APC convention in Ogun State Government premises. He was addressing APC representatives saying they should vote for him,” Okupe said.
Naija News reports that Okupe was the head of Peter Obi’s presidential campaign until he was forced to resign following a court order after he was found guilty of money laundering. . He resigned as a Labor MP after the election.
